Post Two issues...
1) I've had two folks contact me over at CM with requests to get their accounts activated. Apparently they are not getting emails to do so automatically.

2) As part of those discussions, there was a request/suggestion to have an email link someplace to send us an email when these kinds of issues arise. As of now, the only way is to really track us down someplace else...

Thanks!

Yeah, that was me. And I'm pretty sure I tried to register sometime ago in the past and never got an email and so forgot about it. There's no telling how many people that happened to. How about a sticky here in this section with troubleshooting info like who you should email if you're having problems getting registered? At a bare minimum, you should put an email address for contacting a mod in the FAQ.

Sorry about that. We had a spammer crawl in and since late December has been tryign to fire emails off the board. Security on the network is strong enough that both my router and the smtp server itself shut down outbound emails from this board. I have switched over to the local PHP email function and will look into shutting down the spammers.

Hopefully the email should be working properly.

yeah...I saw him in the Announcements section of the store and showed him to the exit...

Thanks!

Uhhh..Bill...I think we may have a problem. I can see all those users stacking up now - the ones with the funny names that scream Spammer...

Hey folks - do we want to go with the process where the admins have to send the users an OK manually?

If it's the best way to handle it for you... But that sounds like a hassle doesn't it, for both mods and new (legit) users?

well..I'm trying to balance things. I mean, I'm on here all the time - pretty much every day all throughout the day. So it's not like it would be a huge new hassle to check the list. That means it is unlikely people would have to wait very long.

I do think it would require an email process to send something to me if one drops through the gaping chasms....uhh...cracks...

I lost the mods to the forum when we moved to the linux box. I need to reinstall them. The specific one, and works like a charm to keep spammers out, is the custom question.

I will hunt this up and install it.

Jim, look up the IPs of the new registrants, if it is RIPE then they are Euro spammers, Brazil has its own net and any RU are most likely spammer scum. Can you handle banning them tonight.

As for a question, how about:

How many sides does a d6 have (Hint: d6 is a six-sided die) : Answer: 6.

So just go ahead and delete them is they are .ru or...what else?

You can use the ban feature in the admin. It can wipe them out posts and all. I usually ban by IP but that can be risky.
