Post Re: Outlaw Press/Jim Shipman is back
Droog getting banned for something is like hearing that another pitbull got impounded for biting a guy. I can't say it's a convincing argument against jackbootism.

What was pretty effective though, was seeing that my old friend Valfader had gotten a warning for a friendly jibe. That's the kind of shit that puts me off the place, everyone's jumping the gun over there it seems, and the whole "group attack" thing seems to have gone even more overboard than it ever was when I was there.

For fuck's sake some dude got banned for making naughty remarks about salespeople.

I frequent RPGnet now and then but for me at least, I'd rather be gaming than talking about gaming (which is not to say that I think such talk is meaningless, but I just can't be bothered trawling through the shit to get to the usefull stuff). Looking back, all that time wasted on arguing about shit that didn't even remotely have anything to do with my gaming. I read some of my old politics posts on theRPGsite and go, wtf...why did I even bother. Thankfully I don't have anything like that on RPGnet.

See, for me, it's not so much the arguing I want back, it's the not-arguing stuff. The variety of games discussed, the ideas, the new hotnesses, that stuff.

There's just more of that there, always was. I always focused on the negative about RPG Open when I was still an RPGnet regular, but compared to the wasteland that is another "Oh look the Forge did something nasty again"/"Oh look another fucking retroclone"/"Oh look this OSR guy says he knows gaming better than Gygax"/etc., well, I start realizing maybe the grass was greener on my own side and I was just too fucking dumb to notice.

Well, droog is not a ModPet, so he had it coming.

Edit: J, IMO RPG Open is a cool place to hang out. There's always been posters who offer up cool interesting stuff (hell you were one of them). I know many guys who post there and don't get involved in any of the drama that seems mostly created by more well established posters. The thing i always get from people I know there, is why did I spend the majority of my time in the RPGsite?

David R

droog's problems go far beyond any personal issues he may have with the moderation.

Actually, I'd go so far as to say his behavior would result in personal issues with the moderation of any board.

I bet that asshole could get banned from 4chan.

I've asked myself this question a thousand times. Why is one of the only true generalist, lightly moderated RPG forum being ignored by gamers?

For my part, there's almost no actual gaming discussion here at the Haven (the Game Play thread didn't get a post for something like 3 months until yesterday, for example), and since that's all I want from a forum I'm forced elsewhere to get my fix, despite the fact that I like the community here.

Lately I'm liking Roludo - though it's actually a smaller community and has about the same number of postings as the Haven, the topics of discussion are more to my taste - being about the craft of gaming and not the industry. It comes closest (after TTO on RPGnet) to meeting my gaming needs.

If I can offer this in the spirit of observation (as an outsider, I guess) - the hard core of the Haven seems to mostly like to discuss either industry topics or D&D related topics - and both of those kinds of subjects have very stiff competition from other, more frequented boards. The result is that people come here wanting to discuss those things soon realize they can get more lively discussions on the same topics elsewhere. People that come here to discuss other topics find that they don't get any traction. My feeling is that, to generate more traffic, the Haven and other sites like it need to find less exploited niches.

One thing I wish existed, for example, was a forum devoted to Historical and Alt History gaming. I throw this out there knowing that the likes of Bill and Clash might be into such a thing, too, and it would be a good place for the Bills, Clashes, Neil Gows, and Paul Elliots of the gaming world to host fora discussing their specific games, as well as for general discussion.

That's a great idea. I'm joining up in an online game of Beat to Quarters soon. The GM is well-versed in the genre, being an old salt himself, but he is also quite busy and it would be great to have another place with a few experts where I could pose questions like how ships compared ordinance by pounds.
