That would work, though it's the baby-with-the-bathwater situation to which I alluded earlier. I've used this option at RPG.net, mostly so my poor browser wouldn't have to chug through the thousands of avatar images every time I visited.

Why not just ask him politely? Just say, you feel awkward asking someone to change their avatar, and you recognize that it is his choice, but that that particular image is tough for you to stomach and would it be possible for him to find something else? I don't think he'll see that as an imposition. He'll probably be kind of psyched that it was actually so effective!

That said, this might be a good point at which to engage in the conversation of what constitutes appropriate content for this site.

Yeah, we've started and then ignored that conversation in a couple of different threads - see the mission statement thread, the moderator policy thread (IIRC), etc.

I think about all we've agreed on is no porn and nothing illegal. I think those are things we can all agree on because there's a pretty consistent method to follow. Yeah, I'm aware of "I'll know it when I see it" factor. But I'd be willing to guess that pretty much everyone has translated "no porn" into "leave the blatant nudity out"...anyone?

I'm aware that there are some cases where breasts are shown in illustrations (see just about any picture of a nymph!) but even those are rare - the pictures, as well as the nymphs.

So we've got, essentially, no nudity and nothing illegal. But it gets more difficult when you get into "nothing gross." I mean, I can see where SP's avatar could be seen as gross - I did. But I think cats are gross. And ducks with hats. And I'm completely turned off of guys who smoke pipes.

Having said that, I think the way to go about this is to find and/or develop tools that give each user the utmost control possible to customize the experience. I know that Bill just loves to hear me say that - given I'm not doing the development

But I'll help where I can, Bill. In the long run, I'd prefer to keep the rules to a minimum and the individual control at the maximum - as much as possible, anyway.

I'm sure he'll at least listen and consider it - and then I have to respect his choice. Rather, I'd prefer for us to respect his choice.

I'm kind of holding off on that at this very moment because I remember from his Twilight thread that he's away today and so really can't respond at the moment.

I'm totally cool with that. I wanted to see if there was an option to handle things on my end first, though.

Can the mod be..uh...modified to just allow the selection of a user?

I would need to work something up and I am hesitant due to db load concerns.

Okay. Plainly I'm a queasy sissy. I own this fact. With that in mind...

When I go into a thread and see any animated gifs, I allow the thread to load and then hit the big red X atop my browser to put a stop to them. I find them all distracting while I read because I am usually also doing two or three other things already and do not need a little dancing image trying to compete for my time and attention.

I tend to change avatars on a regular basis.

I would like to ask then, would you have been offended (or disappointed or any way put out) if we had asked you to change it?

Note: not "asked" as in commanded but just asked you to pick another, on your own terms.
