Post Dark Ages HeroQuest: Part 2
Beneath a high and stony hill, a collection of wooden and wattle huts gather around a wide, beaten, roughly square patch of earth. Beyond the square lies the ruins of a Roman villa, with little remaining but a paved courtyard.

Away from all the other buildings, higher up the slopes of the rocky hill, is a temple, domed and columned in a barbarian aping of classical style, but built in wood and far more crudely. It is surrounded by stakes, set with the heads of enemies in varying stages of decay. Black smoke pours from within, from fires dedicated to many gods.

There is movement everywhere: women hauling wood and water, children swarming in the dust, sheep and cattle straying around the huts, men butchering a bull, young men training by fighting with cudgels in the earth square.

Against the remaining wall of the courtyard, an awning has been rigged, and beneath it sits Uther Pendragon, surrounded by his chieftains. He finishes laughing at a joke and then turns his attention to his visitor. He is a tall robust man despite his seventy years, with a fierce, hawk-like face, pale eyes, and an old sword-cut that makes him look as if he is always grinning sardonically.

"Welcome, Kosmas Pantagathus," he says in a voice slightly sibilant from the lack of teeth on the scarred side of his jaw. "What message does my friend Voteporix have for me?"
