Aces and Eights is pretty crunchy, but the experience system has you gaining experience based on goals you accomplish, most of which are set by yourself or specifically related to the community you're in. It doesn't have any narrative mechanics per se, but has a lot of fun systems set up for specific situations (horse chases, gold mining, cattle herding, bar fights, even trials).

The subsystems that I have glanced through in Aces & Eights are indeed very cool. You can certainly get a ton of ideas there. I just find the game to be a bit too cumbersome in spots. I'd certainly play it though.

Didn't anyone mention Weird West, the minimalist fantasy western RPG?

It's available for a buck at DriveThru.

You guys disappoint me! ;)

If you fancy a bit of Old West role play based on Swords & Wizardry, go along here and download Blood & Bullets:
