D&D: Need help finding an extra PC race...
How's it going, people? Is this place still alive?

So, old school D&D. I want to place a little more emphasis on black and white, good and evil and thus, I don't want any half-orcs.

Always bugged me that most races are frail, smaller than the "standard" human. So looking for some extra muscle, sheer power but something human-like.

Stuff like minotaurs, dragonborns and shit like that strikes me as too grotesque. Bonus point if it references known myths or classic fantasy literature that has entered the public subconscious.

The best I've come with is a giant-blooded race but not too sure about the concept.

There are skinchangers, like Beorn in the Hobbit - people who can change into animals. They are not lycanthropes in any sense. They usually carry the characteristics of the animal in their human form as well, so Beorn was very large and strong. A race of bear skinchangers like the Beornings should do the trick.

That's kinda cool! Especially since I don't plan for my druids to focus heavily on wild shaping like recent editions. Thanks! :)

Any other ideas?

I've got zero ideas here. But at least I'm willing to admit it. :shifty:

Okay, what about Centaurs? Would they be considered to be too monstrous for you? They'd be stronger than humans I think, without going too far overboard.

Too weird, too creepy... but also there's all kinds of situations where they wouldn't fit adventure-wise, so not a good PC option.

But thanks for the suggestion! :)

I've been thinking about trolls from Scandinavian myths, which came in several variety and how to put my own half-assed twist the way Tolkien used to do much more expertly than I can hope.

They would basically be big, wild creatures not too dissimilar from humans rejecting and rejected from major religions. I could see them being fighters and having their own clerical orders. They could tame larger beasts and have an affinity for frost, ice and storm magic.

I was thinking about trolls myself, but had rejected it as you had said you wanted a more black and white morality.
