What the f*** is this walking to Ozymandia's antarctic fortress? Where were Nite Owl's sweet little snow sleds from the comic? Completely ruined the whole movie for me.

They totally screwed it up by making it so you couldn't turn the pages.

It was ruined for me when Lee iacoca got shot. And when Laurie didn't smoke.

The not smoking was really weird. I almost had the feeling there was some unspoken anti-smoking lobby agreement going on in that movie, because they also changed the scene where young Walter Kovacs attacks the bullies. In the comic, he grabs his cigarette and grinds it out in his eye. In the movie, he turns into some junior UFA champion, with these well-formed, powerful blows to the head. The whole point of that Cigarette in the comic was to demonstrate how Rorschach used creativity and over-the-top dirty tactics to make up for his smaller stature.

Those little sphere cigarettes were a nice touch in the comic as well. Why take them out?

I think it was some kind of lobby thing, like you say. The fact that they're eating in a diner in NYC in 1985 and nobody is smoking is really hard to believe.
It also changed the scene wherein Laurie sets off Archie's flame thrower- in the GN she mistakes it for a lighter.
No big deal for me though, I still really enjoyed the movie.

Yes, me too. I had other quibbles, particularly with the length and style of the action scenes. But overall, it captured the themes of the feel of the comic and there were some quite thrilling scenes where I truly felt like "the comic had come alive". Also both of the really touching scenes with Rorschach, when he shakes Dan's hand and when he dies were almost as moving for me in the movie as in the comic.

Oh look at that. We're not paranoid at all:

Quote:
Alan Horn, the head of the studio, hates smoking. That’s his biggest thing. He would say “the Comedian can smoke because he’s a bad guy, but that’s it.” That was the line that he drew. I was sad, but the movie literally wouldn’t have gotten made. You can have her naked, but she can’t smoke.

The entire interview is here.

Man, studio heads, first up against the wall and all that...

(The Acrobatic Flea clued me in on this, so I'll pimp his excellent geek and gaming blog, HeroPress.)

It's funny that smoking would be such an issue in a rated R movie. Also the idea that only evil people smoke is pretty funny too. studio heads, indeed.

I watched the Incredible Hulk last night, and there's a disclaimer at the end, which says something to the effect of "Tobacco smoking in this movie is used purely for artistic reasons, and not to promote the use of tobacco..." and then it goes on to reiterate the surgeon general's warning. Is this what we've come to? How about a disclaimer for all the rampant gunplay? Oh, no wait, puritans are comfortable with violence; it's just unapproved pleasure they have a hard time with.

So, it wasn't all bad news then! (juvenile snigger)

Despite the interminable wait to get it made, Alan pulling the standard no support thing and the odd weird tweak in plot, I thought was excellent. I watched it with two friends who had never read the book (indeed, one had never even heard of it), and they loved it, too. Thumbs up. I shall be breaking out the old DC Heroes supplements just for a spot of extra nostalgia.
