Post Re: [MtB] Wish me luck on my first playtest
In this Lady Blackbird hack I modeled the Traits and Tags of the original. But the feedback I'm getting from people who read it (who admit they haven't read Lady Blackbird and aren't baseball fans) seem completely confused on how to play. Theyy cannot figure out how to do things even though I copied the Lady B half-sheet of rules on each PC sheet verbatim.

I'm puzzled. Would these same people have this problem reading Lady Blackbird or is it a lack of familiarity with baseball?

Here's the latest version of the playtest rules for reference.

I'm wondering if I should do away with Traits and Tags and go for something more blatant, like "Hitting" and "Defense"

Are your players retards?

No, wait, I didn't mean that! :o

If I remember correctly, your group has a pretty wide experience in trying many games, no? It's hard for me to understand what they aren't getting, but I got to actually play the game before really reading the rules. That's the way I think anyways.

It sounds more like it is the core mechanic they are having trouble with. It isn't totally explicit in the book and maybe for people who aren't used to such broad resolutions they may not get it upon reading.

Perhaps you should write up a single example of play, in the baseball context and show a player facing a challenge, deciding what they want to do, choosing a tool and appropriate traits, picking dice from their pool and rolling. and so on. That may help them put it all together.

edit: the game looks really cool. I'm almost tempted to run it instead of Lady Blackbird at Roludothon II on Sunday. (it's not a for sure slot, just if we have too many players.)

Oh, these aren't my playtesters, its a different forum where they chat about game design. I appreciate the responses I get, but they are pretty darn literal in their feedback so I was just checking to see if maybe I was a bit crazy when I felt a little defensive... ok, so I am not totally crazy.

That's an excellent idea. I hoped to keep to the short format of Lady B, but I didn't take into account my foreign concept.

OK, I wrote up an example of play, which then forced me to re-evaluate how the darn thing worked. I'm pretty happy with the solution, which keeps with the quick play and allows for player input.

Please take a look and let me know what you think:

Thanks!

Post Re: [MtB] Wish me luck on my first playtest
I finally got some playtesting last night! We played through six innings (started late) and called it around midnight. It was slow going because we recorded everything, but the game part was pretty fun!

I'm not sure that Tags work for a baseball RPG the way they work for LAdy Blackbird. Tags in Lady B are actions we expect in a game and they are pretty self-explanatory. Frozen Rope, however, not so much on the clear. I may back off Tags and go with something more aligned with The Shaodw of Yesterday, just plain stats. I dunno, still need to think on it.

I'm realizing this game as it is currently written is not an intro for people to baseball. It is a love letter to baseball for baseball fans in its current iteration. I'm not sure how to change that, or if I even want to.

For the next version, I'm stealing something from Apocalypse World and Kagematsu (not two different things, the same thing that exists in both books) and I'm rather excited about it.
