Post [Stormrift:The Invasion of Earth] Patting Myself on the Back
Am finished with the writing portion of Stormrift: The Invasion of Earth--only the art and layout remain--and I just felt like sharing! :) The jury's still out on how it will be received, but I'm really digging the potential for this setting. It's full of action and adventure, sci-fi elements like cybernetics and psionics (which can be downplayed for those desiring a more gritty game), convincing aliens, and a real "survival of humanity" feel.

As you can tell, I'm pretty excited about it. Game designers, you know that feeling you get when you can't wait to play in the gameworld you've been writing about? That's just a really cool feeling.

People say that getting started on a project is always the hardest part, but for me, I find finishing it to be harder--not because I procrastinate, but because there always seems to be some new and interesting element or concept to add.

Anyway, enough pats on my own back. Now I need to start working on some support for the game. Anyone out there want to collaborate on a comic?

Pete

Congrats, that sounds interesting.

Can you tell us abit about the mechanics, or is that under wraps?

Sure thing. Stormrift uses the Genrediversion 3 system developed by Precis Intermedia. It's basically a roll-over 2d6 + stat + skill vs. target number-type system. It's very streamlined and it's modular, so you can tweak parts of the system without breaking others. Combat and other task resolution runs quickly with little to no need to reference the book--just about everything you need is included on the character sheet. Stat blocks comprise about a paragraph which is a HUGE plus in my book.

A typical NPC looks something like this:

Tim “The Hammer” Dorman
Tim “The Hammer” Dorman is an ex-gang member looking to join up with the Resistance.
Abilities: Fitness 4, Awareness 3, Creativity 4, Reasoning 2, Influence 3
Pursuits: Driving (-1), Athletics (+1), Brawling (+2), Melee (+3), Intimidation (+1), Streetwise (+2), Composure (+2)
Gimmicks: Quick, Poor Smell (2), Harmonically-Hampered, Leader
Gear: Heavy clothes, Sledgehammer
Padding: 2 Armor: 2

A typical critter looks something like this:

Wild Boar
Wild boars may be found in most woodlands. Unlike other animals, they are extremely temperamental and prone to attack without provocation.
Abilities: Fitness 3, Awareness 4, Creativity 0, Reasoning 0, Influence 0
Scale: Normal
Pursuits: Athletics (+1), Brawling (+3)
Gimmicks: Hardened, Natural Protection (Hide), Natural Weapon (Tusks: +2inj), Poor Vision, Tolerance to Pain

I had to create the cybernetics and psionics rules from scratch to fit the setting (they're a bit nastier than those found in a lot of other settings), but the rest of the rules are largely the same.
